Deegeta Evith (The Proposal)
When a potential groom comes in
search of a bride’s hand, there are many obstacles they have to face
especially when a typical Sri Lankan couple have various differences.
Deegeta Evith is a play adapted from Anton Chekov’s ‘The Proposal’.
Mudeliyanselage comes to ask for Dayani’s hand from her father, Appuhamy.
However, in talking about his so-called assets and what he can give
to her, they have an ear-splitting argument about a Bandaragama property
which each claim is theirs, to even comparing the speed of how their
cattle can race in the Avurudu games.
Finally, Appuhamy, accepts the proposal even though the matched
couple still continue arguing. A truly catchy and upbeat drama starring
Anusha Dissanayake, Anil Wijesinghe and Prabhath Manohara who made the
audience enjoy the drama with peals of laughter.

Kandoskiriyawa:
Written by veteran playwright Somapala Gunadheera, the play is very
witty and satirical. At the local polling centre, the returning officer
- Gunapala and not Gunadasa as Mrs. Gajasinghe refers to him as - leads
a stressful life listening to the woes of the voters and explaining how
they can cast a vote.
The play Kandoskiriyawa enthralls everyone with how it can be to have
a chaotic situation during ‘election fever’ and how more often than not,
things end up in a fix!
Then along comes Mrs.Gajasinghe who boasts about her background,
explains her family connections and even goes to the extent of trying to
match Gunapala with her daughter Olga to make Gunapala’s life more
difficult.
Gunapala isn’t happpy because he tells that initially
Mrs.Gajasinghe’s daughter might be Olga but after marriage, she’s
definitely going to be vulgar! So he doesn’t want to tie the knot. A
candidate Panditha Kesara shows off his education and a horse-betting
drunkard who shows off to seek attention also makes it a mayhem polling
centre.
Malani Weeramuni, as always returns to the theatrical stage with
dynamism and charisma playing the eloquent role of Mrs.Gajasinghe with
support from Wijeratne Warakagoda, Daya Thennakoon, Grace Ariyawimal and
Seneth Dikkumbura. An all-round fantastic dramatic production! |
