OBSERVER-MOBITEL Cricket Contest regarded as a National Event

Leisha de Silva Chandrasena, Chairperson Sri Lanka Telecom-Mobitel

OBSERVER - MOBITEL : “We are proud to be associated with the prestigious Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Competition in 2010. This competition has a rich history in shaping cricket in Sri Lanka. It is the oldest and most respected sports competition in the country”, said Leisha de Silva Chandrasena, Chairperson of Sri Lanka Telecom-Mobitel.

The Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Competition started in 1978 continues for the 32nd occasion in 2010, paving the way for winners to ascend to the status of national level players. The sporting extravaganza is organised by the ANCL - Sunday Observer. The Observer has been able to contribute its might at a national level and to continuously evaluate schoolboy cricketers performances and reveal their cricketing prowess to the world.

Mrs. Leisha de Silva Chandrasena said that Observer-Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer Competition has provided the limelight for budding cricketers in the country to take on the stars in the international arena. This very essence of the competition symbolizes Mobitel’s success, being the only local player amidst bitter competition against sizeable global players in the telecommunication industry to declare profits in the 1st Quarter of 2010.

“With the dawn of Peace, we are excited that this competition has opened to the entire country, touching the lives of everyone with the sport.

Our commitment to develop sports in Sri Lanka will continue. Sports play an indispensable role both culturally and socially in bringing together individuals and communities as well as in crossing social boundaries. As a responsible corporate citizen Sri Lanka Telecom-Mobitel has understood its corporate responsibility to empower sports and support activities of organizations that attempt to uplift sports talent in Sri Lanka,” said Leisha de Silva Chandrasena.

Chairperson Leisha de Silva Chandrasena added that for many years Sri Lanka Telecom-Mobitel has been a passionate and enthusiastic supporter of the sporting events of Sri Lanka since they believe that it provides an invaluable service to the nation by fostering local sporting talent. As the national telecommunication service provider of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Telecom-Mobitel is driven to empower sports and lead the nation through strengthening and development of relationships through sports and uplifting of local talent.

Hence it is with pride that her organisation extends their support for the Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Competition. She added that the Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Contest has been held for the past three decades and is regarded as a national event of the utmost importance in the school cricket calendar. This annual event with its rich traditions recognises schoolboy cricketers and teams from across the island who have performed with outstanding merit during the school cricket season. As all know, school cricket is the nursery of our national cricket. Hence it is natural that those who are successful in gaining recognition in this event, are normally a short step away from national recognition. Finally Chairperson Leisha de Silva Chandrasena said that it was indeed a great pleasure for Sri Lanka Telecom-Mobitel to partner ANCL-Sunday Observer to support the popular and prestigious competition which recognise the talents of the young cricketers of the country.

The partnership between Sri Lanka Telecom-Mobitel and ANCL-Sunday Observer is taking cricket to the schools in underdeveloped areas and making the game popular is helping the boys to improve their game. Ultimately, Sri Lanka will gain from the process and there will be quality cricketers emerging. She said their aim is to care, share and deliver. Sri Lanka Telecom-Mobitel has taken the lead and schoolboys will benefit.
