Grand win for Vidyartha
By S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy sports corr.
Vidyartha College, Kandy, came back into recconing when they scored a
good 46 points (4 goals, 3 tries, 1 Penalty) to 15 (5 penalties) win
over Zahira College, Colombo in their schools under 19 Division I
Segment B. Singer Shield rugby tournament match played at Nittawela. At
half time Vidyartha led 25-6.
Vidyartha after the heavy defeat they sustained in the hands of St.
Joseph's College, Colombo last week came into this game with vengeance
and put terrors into the Zahirian defence by often breeching them with
some power play.
Vidyartha's lock forward C. Jason Dissanayake was outstanding scoring
three tries and stand Nalin Kumara too had a good game with his probing
kicks to touch which relieved pressure at a time the Zahira forwards
were threatening to break through.
Vidyartha who led 46-9 with about 20 minutes of the game remaining
could not post the half century of points due to some lethargic play
during the final stages of the game. Zahirians tried hard to score
during this period through some good work by their forwards but poor
finishing deprived them the chances of breaching their opponent's
defence they however succeeded in converting two penalties.
Vidyartha scored their tries through lock C. Jason Dissanayake (3)
winger Gayan Whishwa (1), hooker Pramod Bandara (1) flanker A.
Galahahena (1) and stond off Nalin Kumara (1) who also goaled 4 tries
and put over the penalty. For Zahira full back Mohamed Azeez fired 5
penalties.
