Seashore brutality

In ancient Rome on the banks of Tiber
Periodically at Colosseum Romans gather
To witness animal hunts and gladiators fight each other
Then revel at spillage of blood and cheer

In modern Sri Lanka on the Western seashore
A few kilometres sought of metropolis they adore
People on the southern rail track mustered ashore
Brazenly tolerated indiscriminate slaughter of a brother

Many witnessed, some televised the brutal episode
No one volunteered, non prevented, they all lacked bravado
Guardians of law, protectors of citizens allowed waves to swallow
Young life of Sivakumar whose mental abilities were low

Thousands of years have passed since the Romans
Civilised nations, human rights have become mere slogans
Ethics have no bearing on some inhuman morons
When will we become decent humane Sri Lankans?

At Hantane feet

At its feet
Venerated
The climbers
Begin ascent
Grassy planes
On slopes
Inclined
Weed leaves
Swaying
To the wind
The sun
Guards atop
In steaming
Red hot rays
Weary limbs
They climb again
Facing the top
In thirst
As clear water
Quenches quick
Over rocks
Rich soil
Atop Hantane
Many reach
Finally become
Exhilarated

Nasty letter

When the postman brought a letter
From my only sister who lives far away
Happiness flooded me while opening it
And I began reading it with glee

Before long my face was sad
My happiness ebbed away
Tears started to fall just like a spring
As the letter got blotted to my dismay

You should cut your coat dear sister
According to the cloth, she wrote
Should ask your children if you need help
Don't always grumble and complain

Do not write and spoil my days
High time you managed on your own
You love your friends so better ask them
Be contented and do as I say!
The four paged letter came to an end
I was crying and sobbing with shame
For having asked my sister help
All I had got was pain

For many weeks her letter made me cry
Till my closest friends said 'don't reply'
But her birthday drew near by and by
Sent her a card saying I love you anyhow!

It rains

Dark, velvety huge clouds forming a vault
Over the mountains in the east
Spread westward making the lands beneath
Seem as if lying inside a massive cave

The afternoon sun being overpowered by the clouds
Throws its harsh rays down on the earth
In a last struggle to regain the losing territory
Where it reigned unchallenged since morning

Consequently the sun gives in to the clouds
Which put the surroundings in semi-darkness
And threaten with exploding thunder and lighting
Driving everybody homeward

A humid and unruly wind takes the message
That a heavy downpour is on its way
Pebble-like isolated raindrops scatter
Conglomerating the dust on the compound

From the distance now getting closer
Is heard the ever-growing noise of it
Thrashing on trees and everything on earth
Regardless, if it is welcome or cursed

And finally, here it comes, fast and heavy
Across the paddyfield, towards my house,
Lashing through the windows, collapsing on the roof
And pouring all around..... to make me happy!
