Splendid Dance Show!
by Nilma Dole
Even though the rain poured down
in gallons, die-hard fans of dance were unperturbed. Not with a dance
care in the world, toes tapped, hips gyrated and everyone danced their
cares away even when it was cold outside!
The ‘Rhythm of Life’ danced show presented by the dance performers at
the Rhythm World Dance studio was a resounding success. With their guru
Shiromi Perera, they proved that a rain dance is a good one if you put
your heart and soul into it.
With Master of Ceremonies, Noeline Hunter who enlightened the
audience about the various origins of dance and presenting the lovely
dancers themselves, the show was a heart-stopping, beat-pumping rhythmic
beat!
The effervescent Sohan and the X’Periments experimented real stuff
with some smooth jazz to even come memorable ABBA hits. Yasmine mellowed
the audience with some Sade and collaborated with the sweet Anne Nathan
to even give some Suzie Quattro songs.
Sohan was just the ideal booming
singing man who looked cool in his beret and patent leather jacket.
Soundarie David and her Soul Sounds choir did justice to the show by
giving their melting performance with some Sinhala, Tamil and Michael
Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’ renditions.
It was clearly an awesomely
collective effort to give the show a bit of choir spice for everyone
enjoyed it from the various age groups.
The dancers themselves gave us a masquerade, a modern dance medley,
the cha cha, Brazilian fiesta, Vienna waltz, hip hop, freestyle, Cuban
rhythms, a romance dance, Rockin’ Robin, a Tamil dance ‘Kutti Pisaasai’,
Grease-up and a lovely rendition of Frank Sinatra’s ‘New York, New York’
broadway dance!
However, it would have been nice if there was some way that the
audience could have enjoyed and danced with a small dance floor for them
instead of just clapping and tapping their toes and nodding their heads.
We could see many die-hard dancers singing along but it would have been
worthwhile to get them to join too. But it was a fantastic performance
and it was a show like no other!
There were so many talented dancers that it would be so difficult to
name them all in this article but nevertheless, hats off to a brilliant
show! Special thanks should go to Shiromi Perera, the organising
committee and the generous sponsors for making this a dance show to
remember!
