Israeli warplanes raid Gaza

GAZA CITY, May 29, 2010 (AFP) - Israeli warplanes launched six raids on the Gaza Strip overnight Friday, but nobody was hurt in the attacks, Palestinian security officials and witnesses said.Israel carried out five air strikes in the southern part of Gaza near Rafah and the border with Egypt, as well as a sixth raid east of Gaza City, said the sources.

Gaza has been mostly quiet since the end of a devastating 22-day Israeli offensive in January 2009, but the past week has seen several incidents along the heavily guarded border.

The latest was on Thursday, when two Palestinians were wounded in an Israeli air strike east of Gaza City during an exchange of fire after militants launched a mortar round, Palestinian medics and witnesses said.

Israeli news website Nana said a military aircraft had opened fire at a group of men seeking to breach the Gaza border fence, under cover of a heavy sandstorm, in order to launch a raid into Israel.
