New 'reality' show on ITN

Watching ITN on Saturday evenings has now become an interestingly refreshing experience. Over the last half a decade Sri Lankan viewers have been subjected to their share of reality television and many believe that these shows have sunk the high standards set by our forefathers of the tele tube. Under these circumstances its stimulating to see the new 'reality' show on ITN, which promises to push audiences reach beyond the average grasp. DFCC Bank has financed and produced DFCC MindStar - a quality quiz show that is set to leave a lasting impression on generations of viewers.

For those who haven't yet seen the show, the concept is simple. Nine contestants representing each of the provinces get a chance to take part.

Three questions are given out in the first round to all participants. The quickest with the most number of correct answers gets to the Star Seat or Tharu Asuna. Then the competition begins.

The Star Seat contestant is given the opportunity to answer 10 increasingly difficult questions with more money on offer with each question. While the Star Seat contestant is answering these questions the other participants also attempt to answer questions from their seats. If the Star Seat contestant fails, the best from the rest gets a chance to take the seat.

This concept is intriguing because it's a mixture of luck and skill that helps contestants win a Million Rupees. The week before last for instance, one contestant answered nine questions correctly but missed out on the tenth. Rather than ending the show there, the format allows the next best contestant to make an attempt at winning the Million Rupees. In this case the replacement contestant Viraj Madushanka had also answered these nine questions correctly from his seat and was the best person to take up the challenge.

For a million rupees he was asked: What is the official name of The Icelandic Parliament, which is considered to be the oldest in the world? Sabhawa, Republica, Reykjavika and Althing were the options given, "Althing" came the reply from Viraj and in an instant he was a millionaire
