Police nab three conmen

Conmen who diddled unsuspecting persons in the past few weeks from
various parts of the island have been taken into custody by police for
further investigations, Police Media Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody
told the “Sunday Observer”.
A man who posed off a Financial Director of the State sector was
arrested by the police for obtaining money from several persons in the
Polonnaruwa area by promising them low cost loans from the State. Police
found bogus certificates of birth, obscene blue films, applications for
State sector jobs and applications made in connection with land
allocation under the Moragahakanda scheme. A number of National Identity
Cards (NICs) and certificates of educational qualifications were also
found when police raided his residence. The suspect was produced before
the Polonnaruwa Magistrate and remanded till June 16, the Police Media
Spokesman said.
Meanwhile the Trincomalee police arrested a foreign national for
falsely obtaining US$ 7000 plus Rs 250,000 from a private hospital
situated in the Trincomalee area for a project that he promised. Police
also found in his possession materials for printing false currency
notes. A specialist doctor attached to the Trincomalee hospital had
lodged a complaint regarding the fraud.
Last week a police team led by Chief Inspector Lokuhetti raided a
business premises located at the Borella YMBA and found several bogus
documents such as marriage certificates, birth certificates, foreign
degree certificates, and educational certificates, salary sheets and
computers for printing such bogus documents. A suspect residing at
Wanawasala, Kelaniya was taken into custody following the raid.
