Fake jewellery ring busted

Police have busted an organised crime ring which had been involved in pawning fake jewellery and making money to the tune of almost one million rupees.

Officer-in-Charge, Boralesgamuwa Police Station, A.G.I.K. Appelokotuwa said this came to light when a pawnbroker in the area produced a pair of bangles which they suspected was fake.

“We carried out investigations and found out that the gold bangles were cleverly carved so that even the computers at banks and pawnshops recognised them as genuine”, he said.

“Our investigations also revealed that this operation has been running for nearly three months and that several pawnbrokers including a few banks have fallen prey to the gang”. Police have arrested one suspect. However the craftsman is still to be apprehended.

“We are conducting further investigations and have contacted other police stations for assistance in this regard”, he said. - SS
