Police down Soldiers 15 - 8 takes Plate C'ship

Police SC beat Army by 15 points (1 goal, 1 try, 1 penalty) to 8 (1
try, 1 penalty) in their final Caltex `A' Division League match played
at the Army ground, Galle Face yesterday.
This win virtually assured Police taking the 'Plate' Championship in
a decisive match. The winners led 8-0 at the breather.
Police opened scoring through a penalty put over by Harshana
Wijeweera in the 10th minute and Arachchige Romesh scored an unconverted
try at the stroke of half time.
On resumption Asanka Perera put over a penalty for the Soldiers, but
Nalin Welegedera touched down for Police and Wijeweera added the much
needed extra points. Army's points came through the efforts of centre
Asanka Perera who fired over a penalty and went on to score the try.

Liyanage and Kandy SC unchallenged
RUGBY: Pradeep Liyanage of Kandy SC occupied the top spot, poling 376
votes at the Caltex/Sunday Observer Most Popular Rugby Player and the
Most Popular Rugger Club competition at the end of count number 5 and 6.
There were no changes in the other positions too, with CR&FC’s Nigel
Ratwatte (226) and Airman Chanaka Chandimal (173) securing the second
and third places respectively.

TENNIS: Unseeded Kanishka Rajapakse defeated top seed Nicholas
Fairbanks in a gruelling three setter 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in a boys under-16
singles match on the penultimate day of the Hilton Colombo Residence
Tennis Gala 2010 at the Hotel Courts yesterday.
Men Open singles: Lasantha Silva beat Akila de Silva 6/3, 6/1, Ashan
Dep beat Hassan Esufally 6-2, 6-0.
Men Open Doubles: Ashan Dep/Aritha Hewaacottage beat Hamza Hussein/Ajai

Seven schools in U-17 boys hockey

HOCKEY: Seven schools have entered the boys under-17 hockey
tournament for Kandy Schools organised by the Kandy District Schools
Hockey Association which will commence at the University grounds,
Peradeniya from Monday, June 28 onwards.
The teams will be divided into two groups and will play each other on
a league basis. On completion of the league stage the first two teams in
each group will go into the semi-finals.
Group 'A': Dharmaraja College, Trinity College, Menikdiwela Central
College.
Group 'B': Kingswood College, St. Sylvester's College, Vidyaratha
College and Sri Sumangala College.
Dharmaraja College and Kignswood College go out favourites,unless
there are upsets.
Schools u. 17 Hockey tourney July 1 to 4

HOCKEY: The annual All Island schools boys and girls under 17 hockey
tournament organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association will be
worked off at the Edward Park, Bernard Aluwihare Stadium and the
Nandimithra Ekanayake International Hockey Stadium in Matale from July
1st to 4th.
Over sixty schools are expected to participate in this tournament
from all the hockey playing districts in the island.
At the championship played last year in the boys category Dharmaraja
College and Kingswood College became joint champions.
Workshop on physical fitness
PHYSICAL FITNESS: A special guidance workshop organised by Fitness
and Nutrition Institute will be held on Saturday July 3 from 9 a.m.
onwards at Openarc School, Nugegoda. All physical fitness inspectors who
are involved in this field are invited to participate free of charge.
A group of veteran lecturers will address the participants in related
areas such as Sports Science and Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics,
Nutrition and Weight Management, Fitness Test and Exercise Prescription
and Sports Physiology.

Kandy District are champs with 235 points

Athletics: Kandy District emerged champions with 235 points at the
Central Province Athletic Championships at the Bogambara Grounds, Kandy.
Matale came second with 164 points and Nuwara Eliya District were third
with 94 points.
Chief Minister of Central Province Sarath Ekanayake was the chief
guest.
Sangakkara and Ellegala Bridge champs

the Bridge Championship conducted by the Public Services Club, Kandy.
