245,000 students to sit GCE (AL) exam

Two-hundred-and-forty-five thousand students will sit the GCE (Advanced Level) examination this year. Of the total number, 170,000 candidates are school applicants.

A higher number of students have applied to sit the examination from the Colombo, Gampaha, Kandy, Galle and Kurunegala districts.

There will be around 35,000 invigilators, according to Commissioner General of Examinations, Anura Edirisinghe.

Edirisinghe said the GCE (A/L) examination will commence on August 9 and conclude on September 3.

The examination will be conducted in about 2,100 centres islandwide including the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

The Commissioner General said that admission cards for the examination will be printed from the third week of July. School candidates can collect their admission cards from their schools and private candidates will receive them by post.

He said the students sitting the examination should carry their National Identity Cards to prove their identity. The examination will commence at 8.30 a.m. and added that all students should be at their centres at least half an hour earlier.

Students are not permitted to bring calculators, notes, tippex, mobile phones and watches with calculators during the examination and should refrain from copying.

Students will be banned from sitting the examination for three years for fraudulent activities.

The Commissioner General said that there would be a higher university intake this year as the examination will be held for the first time in three decades in a peaceful atmosphere.

He also appreciated the measures taken by the Government to enhance facilities in universities.
