Creativity unleashed!

 Aspiring
young fashion designers in the country seem set to take the industry by
storm with their extreme talents, creativity and dynamism. One such
young talent to watch out for is 26-year-old Charith Saminda Binduhewa
who launched his label Minx recently.
According to him, Sri Lankans have a lot of innate, creative talent,
a fact he noticed while studying Fashion Design at the Lasalle College
of the Arts, Singapore. “Not only in my department but also in the
various other faculties of the college, I noticed that the Sri Lankans
were distinguishing themselves in their chosen Arts. We were ahead of
most of the other nationals in our levels of creativity and output.”
Charith, who has permanent resident status in Singapore, nevertheless
chooses to be based in Sri Lanka although he does fly back and forth
often.
Soon after graduating from the Lasalle College, he worked for
Singapore Airlines, where he designed their corporate uniforms. Coming
down to Sri Lanka in 2008, he participated in the Sunday Observer
Fashion Designer of the Year, where he was one of the fifteen finalists.
It was his first experience of its kind and he says he learnt a lot
through it.
Soon thereafter, he went back to Singapore and did two more shows,
one of which was for the famous Singapore Food Festival. “The organisers
wanted us to design wear for models out of food items. All the other
designers used fruits and vegetables. I used chocolates,” grins Charith
adding that the organisers were very impressed with his eight chocolate,
designer wear and have asked him back for this year’s festival as well.
About his label, Minx, he says he is “more into female clothing” as
well as urban and retro black which was the theme of his launch at the
Continental hotel. His ambition, he says, is to keep on experimenting
with different designs and “create something new.”
Charith thanks the Sunday Observer for giving him the platform to
shine and helping him achieve fashion status by holding his fashion
show!
