Convicted Lankans won’t benefit by Lebanon amnesty

Sri Lankan workers in Lebanon who were convicted by the Lebanese Government for indulging in various criminal activities will not benefit from the three-month special amnesty declared by the Lebanese Government for Asian workers.

According to a spokesman for the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) around 3,000 Sri Lankan workers will benefit by the amnesty.

SLBFE Chairman Kingsley Ranawaka told the Sunday Observer that many Sri Lankan workers in Lebonan are unable to return to their motherland due to the validity period of their visas and work permits expiring.

Sri Lankans who had lost their passports will be provided with Emergency Certificates, he said.

According to Sri Lanka’s envoy in Lebanon M. Maharoof arrangements have been made by the Sri Lankan Embassy to provide airline tickets to needy workers to return to the country.

The Bureau Chairman has directed Sri Lanka’s envoy in Lebanon to make arrangements with airlines, so that our workers could return to the country as early as possible.
