Petes trounce Joes
by Ranjan Anandappa
RUGBY: St. Peter's retained the Rev. Fr. Basil Weeratunga Trophy for
the eleventh successive year when they beat traditional rivals St.
Joseph's by 55 points(6 goals, 2 tries, 1 penalty) to nil. in their
inter-school under-20 rugger match played at Bambalapitiya yesterday.
The Joes had nothing much to offer against a much superior Peterite
outfit, the league champions. They were able to a little spoiling work
and tries to minimize the scoring. But whenever the Peterites were on
the move it was not so easy stopping them.
The Joes also indulged themselves in a number of mistakes which gave
the advantage to the Petes.
Peterites drew first blood off a Meedin penalty and thereafter it was
a case of the home invading the Joes' territory, time and again. The
winners led 20-0 at the breather. On resumption the winners scored four
tries, three by flanker Shenal Dias and one by Banuka Nananayakkara all
were converted by Meedin.
In the first half, Lakitha Perera scored off a three-quarter move
followed by two more tries by Wimaladharma and Danusshka Ranjan.
Referee: Nizam Jamaldeen.
