An adverb of manner tells us how something is done.
1. Adverbs are used to describe verbs.
Many adverbs are formed by adding the 'ly' ending to adjectives.
These are usually adverbs of manner.
Father spoke to me angrily.
Harry swims fast. |

She treated the orphan kindly.
Late-comers entered the classroom quietly.
2. Some adverbs do not take the 'ly' ending. They have the same form
as adjectives.
Harry is a fast swimmer. (adjective) Harry swims fast. (adverb)

The class started late. (adverb)
The room has a high ceiling. (adjective)
He hit the ball quite high (adverb)
Our house is the last one on the left. (adjective)
He always comes last. (adverb)

3. Adverbs are usually placed next to the words they describe.
The baby smiled sweetly at him.
4. Adverbs of manner can be placed at the beginning of a sentence.
Quietly she left the classroom.
Carefully they crossed the road.
Cheerfully the little girls smiled at us.
Gracefully they danced to welcome the President.
5 Adverbs of manner can be placed at the end of a sentence.
The boy walked up the hill hurriedly.
Wimala crossed the road carefully.
He was driving dangerously.
"I want that doll,' the child said stubbornly.

6. Adverbs of manner can be placed between the subject and the verb.
Maria quickly calmed her baby.
