The 88th Senior National Athletic Championship:

Army throwers set two SL records

ATHLETICS: Two athletes from Sri Lanka Army L. W. D. M. Liyanagedara and G. J. A. Galahena performed the best establishing two new Sri Lanka records in the men's and women's Hammer Throw discipline respectively on the penultimate day of the three day 88th National Athletic Championships conducted by AA of Sri Lanka held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Sports Complex, Diyagama, yesterday.

Liyanagedera set the first record with a fine throw of 38.42 metres to beat the previous mark held by K. Nilantha also of Army 38.31 metres in the year 2008. R. M. N. T. K. Rathnayake of Army was placed second with 37.60 metres while the earlier record holder K. Nilantha managed only the third place with a throw of 36.78 metres.

In the women's Hammer Throw G. J. A. Galahena established the second Sri Lanka record when she had a fine throw of 30.16 metres to erase her own mark of 27.14 metres at the Army Open Athletic Championships held last year.

The meet will be continued today with 12 final events to be worked off from 2 p.m. C. B. Ratnayake, Minister of Sports will be the chief guest while Greg Young Chief Executive Officer, Sri Lanka Telecom PLC will be the guest of honour.
