Mahela reaches a milestone

CRICKET: Former captain Mahela Jayawardena became the third Sri Lankan batsmen to reach 9000 runs in one day internationals.

The 33 year old elegant right hander reached this milestone during his knock of 39 in the Tri Nation tournament final against India at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium yesterday.

Jayawardena who made his one day international debut against Zimbabwe at the R. Premadasa Stadium way back in January 1998 achieved his goal while playing in his 325th one day international.

Jayawardena who also has over 9000 runs in test cricket is now just 281 runs away from overtaking another former captain Aravinda de Silva with veteran Sanath Jayasuriya still in front with a tally of 13362 runs. CD
