Gateway College- u.17 cager champs

BASKETBALL: Gateway College, Colombo won the under 17 All-Island Basketball Tournament when they beat St. Joseph's College, Colombo by 64 points to 57 in the Sri Lanka Schools Basketball final at S.Thomas' College Courts in Mount Lavinia.

In the tournament organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association, Gateway College beat St. Michael's College, Batticaloa by 68 points to 18 in the semi-final and beat St.Peter's College by 68 points to 58 in the quarter-finals.

It was a thrilling final where both St.Joseph's and Gateway were evenly matched. Gateway, however, made their move towards the end of the first ten minutes. Kaumith Illeperuma's three-pointer interspersed by Danushka Gunasekera's drive in the lane and Shehan Udugampola's success with energetic play helped Gateway to score the Josephians 39-36 in the closing moments of the second quarter.

The best offensive player of the final was Brendon Keyser of St.Joseph's while the best defensive player was Shehan Udugampola of Gateway. The most valuable player of the final was Danushka Gunasekera of Gateway. Danushka ended with 23 points and 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

The consolidation final between S.Thomas' Mount Lavinia and St. Michael's College, Batticaloa was won by the Thomians.
