Arohara - Praise the Lord Skanda | Sunday Observer editorial supplement
Shanmugar of Nallur

(Muviru Mugangal Potti ... )
(Muhampollil Karunai Potti ... )

Haloed are the six faces -
Flooded and brightened are the 'Mercy' and the "Perarul"
From those twelve sparkling eyes -
So piercing and darting -
Towards all the directions of the 'globe'
From those dozen of labials -
Forming the pleasant smiles for ever -
Blessed and fathered by the ever shining -
'Oneness' - the Lord Shiva -
Shanmugar of Nallur -
Rises from his sacred 'Vasantha Mandapam'
To visit and embrace all of us.

Erected and echoed by 'Mallari' -
the six faced 'Shanmugar' -
Smartly appears -
Sitting on a strong silver pedestal -
He performs the 'Dance of rotation' -
Before entering the 'Ratham'.
Shouldered by thousand of men in trance
'Shanmugan' moves like a brave armed 'King'
To face the battle of destruction and redemption.

Demolished are the demons and devils.
Expelled are the evils and anger.
Grounded are the greediness and cunningness.
Crushed are the crimes and calamity.

Look at those six heavenly faces!
Elegantly ornamented -
Crowned by the common 'Muddi'
Made of gold and silver -
With the sparkling and glittering of
Gems and pearls -
Reflecting against the young and untired -
Rays of the dawning and winking Sun.

Garlands of gorgeous flowers -
Roses, Mallikai and Nithiyakalyani -
Run as white cascades flowing -
From the broader shoulders to the
Strong chest of Murugan.
Garlands of Ponnochi and Thema buds -
Make a yellow glow around the slender neck
Of Shanmugar.

Fountained and sprinkled -
By the buds and the petals -
Of lotus
Vibrated with millions of
'Aro haras' and 'Murugas' -
Within the giant summoning of temple bells -
Hands joined and prayed over their heads -
Thrilled and wondered!
Tears downing from their eager eyes -
With clappings and wavings -
The worshippers welcome -
Their God - Murugan -
Entering through the 'Rajakopuram'

the blue sky -
Cleansed now from the carbon and sulphur -
Smokes of cluster bombs and squeaking shells -
Filled and perfumed -
With the camphor smokes and the holy Akni,

Walking bravely towards the 'Ratham' -
To chieftain the war of purification -
To create a new and repaired world
For his tired and torn people -
For their peaceful existence.

(Saranam, Saranam Saravana Bava Ohm!
Saranam Saranam Shanmuga Saranam!)
