People's sovereignty assured

The proposed constitutional amendments will further strengthen the people's sovereignty. The government has been assured of more than two-thirds majority to have them passed by parliament, said Mass Media and Information Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella.

The Minister said more opposition parliamentarians would support the amendments at the time it is presented in parliament. The people's sovereignty is superior to the constitution but certain sections of it have imposed restrictions on the sovereignty.

However much a national leader could command public confidence and dedicate himself to develop the country, the constitutional ceiling on the terms of presidency has placed restrictions on the people's sovereignty.

There is no truth in the opposition propaganda that the proposed constitutional amendments have to be endorsed by a referendum. No more referendum is necessary when both the president and the government have won an unprecedented public mandate which is fully representative of public opinion Minister, Rambukwella said.
