Minister assures water for all

Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena yesterday directed the officials to provide water facilities to nearly 10,000 houses belonging to low income families in the Colombo city before the end of this year.

Minister Gunawardena directed that immediate steps should be taken to provide water facilities to all.The Minister was speaking at the inauguration of the water supply project of "87 watta", Grandpass, Colombo yesterday. This water project was commissioned at a cost of Rs.3.5 million provided by Western Provincial Council member Salochana Gamage from Provincial Council funds. Under this project water facilities will be provided to 2500 people in 400 houses.

The Minister said steps have been taken to ensure increased flow of water to the areas. Where the 10,000 houses are located. The Ministry has also implemented a project with the assistance of the ADB to develop the sewerage system in the Colombo city.

"We would have to face serious problems if we don't provide pure drinking water and sanitary facilities to the future generation. But the public participation is essential to make this exercise a success.
