At least 25 policemen were killed and 52 injured when two dynamite-laden trucks parked at the Karadiyanaru police station, Batticaloa accidentally exploded. The explosives were meant for construction activities in the East. Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne visiting the place where the explosion occurred on Friday.

Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne who visited the blast site at Karadiyanaru has directed the Batticaloa Government Agent to provide urgent assistance to the relatives of victims. The Chinese Ambassador also accompanied the Prime Minister.

Two held over Govt official's abduction

A two-member underworld gang who abducted a top government official while he was on his way to work and demanded Rs. 4.5 million for his release was taken in for questioning by sleuths of the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) after launching a manhunt for the gang, police sources told the Sunday Observer.
