The plight of a baby elephant
Wandering in
the rural village
A she-elephant
and its cub
Fell in the
huge well
Made for
watering the fields
The kind
villagers came to help
But it frightened
the she-elephant
It got so
hysteric and became insane
And drowned
its own cub
In the water
they both fell in
Why did she
do that?
Does anyone
have an answer?
Why do
people commit suicide?
Does anyone
have an answer?
There are
many things
We cannot
answer but
What I cannot bear
to think is that
The little
cub paid with its life
Just because
it fell into a huge well

The poet through an incident of baby
elephant and she -elephant falling into a pit, draws a parallel with
suicide. The excited she-elephant in her struggle draws the baby
elephant. The poet poses the question why do people commit suicide? The
poem basically narrates an incident and some thoughts of the poet. What
saddened the poet is the killing of the baby elephant. The poem would
have been more effective if the poet has not expressed the feeling
directly towards the latter part of the poem. - Indeewara
Uncertainty
Nobody can stop changes
So they are inexorable.
Nobody can prevent changes
So they are inevitable.
Nobody can ignore changes
So they are inescapable.
Nobody can avoid changes
So they are ineluctable.
Changes are inexpressibly elegant,
at the phase initial.
Whereas at the phase final,
changes are inexpressibly inelegant
To change the inelegance
Yet nobody is eligible.
Tharini Salwathura
The poem is about the inevitable change that
occurs in life. At the initial stage, changes are welcomed but later
they are loathsome for some. So the changes are so varied and occur in
each and every matter. Even the atoms are subjected to constant change
so are the emotions in men and women. The poet tries to make a
philosophical note in a simple diction. What always associates with
change is uncertainty which is in another way the title of life. -Indeewara
