Graffiti on walls - mischief makers beware

The police will take stern action against those who scrawl graffiti on parapet walls in the city and the suburbs.

According to the police, mischief makers who draw graffiti on parapet walls near popular schools and at main junctions in the Colombo city have become a nuisance.

The graffiti is a common sight on walls opposite St. Bridget’s Convent, Royal College, Ananda College, Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo University, Town Hall area, Dharmapala Mawatha and many other places in Colombo despite the strict security measures taken by the police and the Army to maintain law and order.

The police said that these drawings are carried out by organised persons at night to sling mud at the school authorities, politicians and also to sully the reputation of influential persons in the society.

The graffiti portrays ugly scenes with filthy words which could tarnish the minds of the younger generation, especially schoolchildren. Police Media spokesman, Prishantha Jayakody told the Sunday Observer that the City Traffic police patrolling the streets at night have taken steps to arrest this trend.
