Local universities to provide scholarships to Indian students

The Higher Education Ministry has sought the assistance of Indian professors and senior lecturers to work in Sri Lankan universities during their sabbatical leave period.

This follows a discussion the Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake had with Indian Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal during his recent visit to India.

The Indian Government has also pledged its assistance to set up an engineering and agriculture faculty at Jaffna University. During the discussion, attention was also focused on exploring the possibility of providing training to our university teachers in India, Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake told the Sunday Observer.

The Minister who said his Ministry has decided to provide 200 scholarships to Asian students in Sri Lankan universities by the year 2012, pledged to allocate 40 percent of such scholarships to Indian students. Minister Dissanayake has invited the Indian Human Resource Minister to visit Sri Lanka.
