German Ambassador meets Prime Minister
German Ambassador Jens Ploetner held discussions with the Prime
Minister, D.M. Jayaratne at the Parliamentary Complex recently. Ploetner
highlighted the great challenges and opportunities lying ahead of Sri
Lanka: "Transforming the Island from a country at war to a society
living in peace is a daunting but noble task.
The Ambassador pledged German support for this endeavour, pointing
out that Germany was provided aid totaling Euro 12 million this year
alone. "Germany is supporting the resettlement and reconstruction
efforts in the North and East to the best of its possibilities".
Germany to support Sri Lankan natural disaster preparedness,
Ambassador Jens Ploetner: "We should not forget the terrible lessons of
the Tsunami!"
The Federal Republic of Germany supports natural disaster
preparedness with the building of disaster control units in Ampara
District.
Germany is funding the German Red Cross whose programme aims to
strengthen the population's ability to face natural catastrophes
effectively.
Complementing the intensive work the German Red Cross has done after
the tsunami this is yet another project Germany accomplishes in Ampara
District.
German Ambassador Jens Ploetner stated that "Early warning and
disaster preparedness are vital factors for tsunami-endangered regions
like the Eastern District. We must do everything to ensure that public
awareness and preparedness are developed. Never again should lack of
these vital factors lead to the tragic loss of so many lives."
