The Associated
Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (ANCL) together with the Sri Lanka
Foundation Institute (SLFI) will commence a public lecture
series on various topics. The agreement was signed at a
ceremony at the ANCL, last week. Here ANCL Chairman Bandula
Padmakumara and SLFI Chairman Dr. Ranjith Bandara exchange

200th anniversary of Panadura Rankoth Vihara

The 200th anniversary of the establishment of the historic Panadura
Rankoth Vihara will be celebrated at 2.30 p.m.today.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa will grace the occasion.
The Mahanayake of the Amarapura Nikaya will preside over the public
meeting to be held at the Rankoth Vihara premises.
The President will also lay the foundation stone for a four-storeyed
Pirivena building and the new sangawasa.
Vice Chancellor of the Kelaniya University Ven. Velimitiyawe Kusala
Dhamma Nayaka Thera and Nayaka Theras of the Amarapura Sector, Ministers
and Parliamentarians in the Kalutara District will also participate.
A commemorative stamp will also be issued by the Postal Department to
mark the 200th anniversary of the Vihara.
Over 600 power pirates nabbed
The flying squad of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) rounded up 608
electricity pirates during raids conducted in Trincomalee, Minneriya and
Puttalam last month.
Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has directed the
authorities to take action against corruption and other irregularities
to make the CEB a profitable venture.
WP Councillor's mother passes away
Mrs. Kalubowilage Nelie Neslin Perera passed away. She was the mother
of former Minister and present Member of the Western Provincial Council,
Hector Bethmage and mother-in-law of Ranjith Perera of the VDT Editorial
Reading Department of Lake House.
Her remains lie at No. 6, Walawwatta Road, Gangodawila, Nugegoda and
the funeral will take place at Udahamulla cemetery today Oct. 10 at 4.00
p.m.
Master's, PhD seminar
On the directive of the Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake,
Dr. Graham Mcgregor, the Director for Business Research at the
University of Otago, New Zealand will hold a free seminar for university
teachers who engage in their Master's and PhDs.
The seminar will be held on October 19, 20 and 21 at the
Post-Graduate Institute of Management, University of Jayawardenepura,
Colombo 8.
Registration for the seminar will be accepted by October 13.
The workshop is intended for those seeking to undertake postgraduate
study for research based Master's or PhD degrees, which have a
dissertation or thesis component. The workshop is designed to help you
confront these issues in a positive and practical way. It will provide
activities and guidelines that will assist to find a topic, previous
dissertations in the same area, and importance for the academic
community.
Unhygienic food, hotels in the net

"Health raids" carried out with the coordinated efforts of the
Police, Kandy Municipal Council and the Provincial Council (PC) brought
to light the amount of unhygienic food with which some hoteliers of
Kandy provide their customers, said the Chief Medical Officer of Kandy
Dr. M.K. Yapa.
Giant tea cup
The Guinness World Record was broken for the largest cup of tea. The
event was overseen by an official Guinness Adjudicator from London, UK
who monitored the process and handed over the official certificate
confirming the attempt to Chairman/Managing Director - GSK Consumer, Sri
Lanka, Sachi Thomas .
The previous record was held by the Health Centre in Fort Scott,
Kansas, USA, on September 26, 2009. The cup had been made to hold 3,000
liters, which is 660 gallons of tea. The record created by Viva was a
1,000 gallon cup of tea.
The giant cup was 10 feet in height and 8 feet in width. It was
designed using 16 gauge, 1 inch thick steel which was nickel plated.
Six, 2,000 wattage heaters and a stirrer powered by motors and
generators to keep the tea warm.
