7th annual Regatta against Ladies College:

Musaeus register convincing victory

Musaeus College registered a convincing victory over Ladies College in their 7th annual Regatta worked off at the Baira Lake yesterday. Musaeus oarswomen were in fin form, winning eight out of ten events of the Regatta. They collected a total of 46 points to beat Ladies College, which managed to obtain only six points. Ladies College painted a poor picture and was successful in winning only the 'B' Scull and 'B' Pairs events.

The architect of the Musaeus victory was Swarnamali Wijesinghe who took part in all four 'A' races, both scull, pairs, four and doubles and won all four - a dream of any oarsman or women.

The most interesting of the ten races were the 'B' four and 'A' four races which were won by Musaeus after keenly contested tussles. Incidentally, the winner in the both the races was separated by a mere four-second margin. Musaeus team clocked four minutes and 11 seconds to win 'B' four event, slightly ahead of ladies College's timing of four minutes 15 seconds.

Musaeus also had another close call in 'A' fours event, having clocked four minutes and eight seconds against their rivals' timing of four minutes and 12 seconds.

The biggest victory margin was recorded by Ladies College in 'C' Four event, returning a time of four minutes and 27 seconds. Musaeus girls were way behind in finishing the race in five minutes and 33 seconds.

The customary old girls four race was won by Ladies College in four minutes 41 seconds, ahead of Musaeus' mark of five minutes six seconds. But it was a consolation win for Ladies as the race was not considered in the main championship.

The event was worked off wet weather conditions but the Musaeus oarswomen beat all odds to complete a smart win and underlined their supremacy.

Niroshini Seneviratne, former Ladies College rowing captain, was the chief guest at the annual Ladies-Musaeus Regetta which was sponsored by Dialog Telekom.
