by Uditha KUMARASINGHE
A special committee headed by former Minister Mano Wijeratne has been
appointed to make recommendations to minimise the ever increasing number
of fatal accidents daily, in the country.
The committee has already held three rounds of discussions. Wijeratne
had also functioned as Head of the previous Parliamentary Select
Committee appointed in this regard, Transport Minister Kumara Welgama
told the Sunday Observer yesterday.
He said that his Ministry in collaboration with the police has taken
several precautionary measures to prevent fatal accidents. “We will
implement new measures to prevent such accidents,” he said.
The Ministry has decided to instal warning bells and traffic lights
to prevent accidents at railway crossings. The Transport Ministry is
also responsible for such accidents as the railway track belongs to the
Ministry, he said.
Minister Welgama said that a decision has also been taken to register
all motor-cycles under the 50 CC category and make helmets compulsory
for riders.
