Monorail for Colombo and suburbs mulled

The Transport Ministry is exploring the possibility of building a monorail transport system for Colombo and the suburbs.

Several countries have already pledged assistance to launch the monorail system in the country, Transport Minister Kumara Welgama told the Sunday Observer. He said they would operate the service initially from Ratmalana to Battaramulla.

Minister Welgama said that the monorail transport system was quite expensive and its returns are somewhat slow. A colossal amount has to be spent to start this system.

The Minister said that he had visited Korea to get an understanding of this system.

"We are now exploring the possibility of implementing the monorail transport system in Sri Lanka," the Minister said.
