World Buddhist Congress in Sri Lanka

Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne said that the World Buddhist Congress would be held in Sri Lanka to mark the 2600th Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi.

He was speaking at the conference at the Ampara District Secretariat. He said the people's enthusiasm was a prelude to the success of the Buddha Jayanthi.

Unlike its predecessors, the present government has implemented programs to develop all places of religious worship at district level. No country has realised its development priorities in the absence of spiritual development, he said.

The premier said that material progress has made headway along with spiritual development.
