Central Province women scores record 21 goals

Central Province womens team scored a record 21 goals to nil win over Northern Province in their womens hockey tournament at National Sports Festival organised by the Ministry of Sports and worked off at Edward Park, Matale yesterday. At half time Central Province built up an unassailable lead of 12-0.

Former Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya and Sri Lanka Centre forward Chathurika Wijesuriya was in grand form with the stick slamming 8 goals including a hat-trick. The other goal scores for Central Province were Madhushani Jayanetti (4), Yamuna Wijesuriya (4), Kamini Kusumsiri (1), Buddhika Gunasena (2) and Susanthika Thejendra (2).

Mangala Karunaratne and M. Naushad umpired.

Central Province will now meet Sabaragamuwa Province in the semi finals this morning.

Sabaragamuwa Province beat Eastern Province 2-1 on tie breaker after the match ended in a scoreless draw.

Western Province entered the finals by defeating Uva Province by 3 goals to nil. At half time Western Province led 2-0. Goal scores for winners were Maduka Nanayakkara (1), Visuru Perera (1), Nadesha Nisamali (1).

Sabaragamuwa Province beat Southern Province 3-0 to enter the semi final.

Ishar Sandaratne (2) and Jeewantha Jayaratne (1) sounded the boards for Sabaragamuwa Province.

The final will be played this afternoon at Nandamithra Hockey Stadium Matale.

NWP creates an upset

North Western Province created a major upset when they bet the more fancied Western Province 4-1 in the same tournament at the Nadimithra Stadium, Matale yesterday.

It was Western Province who scored first through S.C. Nilaweera and the North Western Province equalised through Saman Nandana.

But in the second half North Western Province added three more goals to their tally through C.A.A.H. Fernando (2), W.I.U.D. Fernando (1), H.M.C. Bandara and N. Paraneetharan umpired these was a colourful opening ceremony attended by the Chief Minister of the Central Province Sarath Ekanayake, Deputy Minister of Transport and Matale District MP Rohana Dissanayake and Director of Sports (CP) H.G. Ariyaratne.

Defending champion Southern Province beat Northern Province 6-0 gaol scores for winners are T.M.W. Kulatunga (1), G.H.M. Kumara (1), S.S. Priyankara (1), M.T. Kularatne (1) and P. Gunaratne (1), C.H. Bandara and Duminda Fernando umpired.

Eastern Province beat Uva 4-1 after leading 2-1 at the breather.

Eastern Province scored through M.A.D. Muthu Kumara (1), S.N. Rajapakse (1), M.J. Sanjeewa (1) and B.K.D.S. Kumara. For Uva R.M.M.B. Ratnayake scored their solitary goal.Central Province received a walk over from North Central province who failed to turn up.

The matches will be continued this morning.The finals is expected to be played at 3.30 p.m. at the same venue today.
