High quality CFL bulbs from January

A program to promote high quality Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs among the 4.3 million electricity consumers in the country will be launched by the Power and Energy Ministry from January.

According to the program, the Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA) has planned to educate people islandwide on the use of high quality CFL bulbs instead of the mostly substandard varieties of bulbs currently being used. Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka told the Sunday Observer that it is pathetic to see many people still using low quality CFL bulbs without much awareness about them.

He said the use of high quality CFL bulbs will enable the country to save over eight billion rupees every year. A special label is clearly reflected on all high quality CFL bulbs; it mentions that such bulbs increase the energy efficiency. Meanwhile, a senior CEB official said the Power and Energy Ministry also has plans to distribute high quality CFL bulbs to electricity consumers at reduced rates through countrywide CEB offices.
