Cubans probe plane crash that killed 68

Cuban investigators on Saturday probed the country’s worst plane crash in two decades, in which all 68 people on board, including 28 foreigners, had been killed. On Friday, the investigators found the “black box” voice and data recorders of the Cuban airliner that crashed in central Cuba Thursday, 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of Havana.

Panicked Indonesians flee deadly volcano

Rescuers picked through the rubble of destroyed homes Saturday as officials prepared for a mass burial of people killed by the violent eruption of Indonesia’s most active volcano. Ash, deadly heat clouds and molten debris gushed from the mouth of Mount Merapi and shot high into the sky, triggering chaos on the roads as people fled their homes.

Qantas says fleet safe after ‘unrelated’ mid-air incidents

Dramatic mid-air engine failures that struck two Qantas aircraft in as many days are unrelated, the airline said Saturday, adding it was confident of the safety of the planes it is flying. Qantas grounded its A380 superjumbos on Thursday after one carrying 466 passengers and crew was forced to return to Singapore after an engine exploded during ascent, raining debris onto an Indonesian island.
