Minister stresses importance of local art and craft

Sri Lanka's make-up of different ethnic groups is what makes this a
multi-talented country blessed with a variety of arts and craft, said
Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa, at the Sri Lanka
Design Festival. The Minister was addressing the gathering at the
inauguration of the festival that was attended by top international
fashion designers and design experts. He said, "Craftsmanship is an
integral part of Sri Lanka and it is up to our future generation to take
this unique tradition forward."
Minister Rajapaksa said that Sri Lanka is not only a place for
hospitable people but beaches, wildlife, waterfalls and many more
natural attractions, that tourists can enjoy in an eco-friendly manner.
Moreover, he highlighted that it wasn't just the tourism activities on
offer, but the handicrafts which can be bought by international buyers.
He said, "The modernisation of our local craft would make it appealing
to a wider audience and uplift these craft in a better way."
Minister of Industries and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen and Export
Development Board (EDB) Chairman Janaka Ratnayake also spoke. The EDB
Chairman said, "Keeping in line with the Mahinda Chinthana vision for a
new Sri Lanka, the EDB's 'Export Reed' program has already helped Small
Medium Enterprises produce internationally competitive products to cater
to a niche market and we are committed to taking this forward."
