Navy rescues flood-affected

In a swift response to the floods that occurred due to heavy rains over night, Sri Lanka Navy deployed flood relief teams to assist the General Public affected in several low-lying areas on 11th October. Since the morning 09 flood relief teams with 10 Rubber Floatable Dinghies (RFDs) and Fiber Glass Dinghies (FGDs) remain deployed in Diyawanna Oya (Battaramulla), Piliyandala, Boralesgamuwa, Mirihana, Nugegoda, Rajagiriya, Narahenpita, Borella and Grand Pass areas, according to Navy Spokes person captain Atula Senarath.

Naval troops have assisted the evacuation of people trapped in buildings and homes and ferrying them to safe places. Continuing their relief operations for the second consecutive day, they distributed cooked meals and bottled drinking water to the people in the affected areas. As a precautionary measure, additional Naval flood relief teams are on stand by for contingency deployments. With the onset of the inter-monsoon weather, certain parts of the island have experienced heavy rains accompanied by thunder and strong winds. Several roads have become submerged causing disruption to public transportation.

The Navy is monitoring the situation and liaising with relevant authorities for the provision of relief assistance as and when needed, according to the spokes person.
