The Motha range is exported to UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Italy,
Maldives, India and the Middle East.
Around 90 percent is sold in Sri Lanka while the balance is exported
to countries with a high concentration of Sri Lankans said Chairman
Motha Confectionery Works (Pvt) Ltd., Julius Motha.
He said that the company which was established by Tiburtius Motha,
his father in 1920 has come a long way.
Cake maker R. L. Clement said that Motha, understanding the needs of
the customer caters to their requirements. The quality of products is
unmatched.
In USA, he together with his daughter had to attend a competition.
His daughter used Motha icing sugar.
He was compelled to use another brand as he was short of Motha icing
sugar which made him lose 2.5 marks.
This proves that Motha icing sugar is the best. Today, cake making
has overtaken the making of pastries as a self-employment avenue
worldwide.
Culinary art expert Shantha Mayadunne said that Motha products help
the self employed to improve their skills.
The range of jellies and other puddings which do not need
refrigeration allows even the poor to enjoy these food items.
The range of products include quick set jelly(moss jelly) diet jelly,
faluda mix, pudding mixes as well as ingredients such as icing sugar,
baking powder, gelatine, cornflour, essences and colouring.
The company was begun to import confectioneries but due to import
restrictions, in 1960 the company shifted to manufacturing of hard
boiled sweets and toffees as a small family business and later shifted
to jelly.
