
The Sri Lanka Vocational Training Authority in collaboration
with UNICEF will set up a Vocational Training Centre at
Mullaitivu. The centre will be housed at the Multi-Tech
Building. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 34
million. Training courses include aluminium pre-fabrication,
bakery trade, beauty culture, hair-dressing, tailoring,

The Reconstruction Project for the Northern railway line was
inaugurated recently at Medawachchiya with an indian credit
facility, by the Indian External Affairs Minister S.M.
Krishna during his recent visit to the island. The railroad,
197 km in length from Omanthai to Palai and Medawachchiya to
Thalaimannar, will be constructed at a cost of US$ 417

New Thinakaran Editor-in-Chief

S. Thillainathan, a veteran journalist has been
appointed Editor-in-Chief of ANCL’s Tamil publication Thinakaran.
Thillai, as he is popularly known, began his career at the
Virakesari in 1962 and was later attached to the Tamil and English
dailes of the Davasa Group of Newspapers. He also served at the SLBC
as its News Editor in 1989. |
British scholars' annual get-together
The Sri Lankan British scholars numbering 600 will
celebrate Christmas at their get-together at the British Council on
11th Saturday at 7 p.m. in the British Council premises, Colombo.
The British Scholars' Association comprises its
members who have studied in the United Kingdom.
The Association has a membership of over 600 is an
organisation providing networking opportunities for British educated
professionals.
Among the membership are several ministers,
university academics and many others holding senior positions in the
public and private sectors.
The year end get-together is an annual event where
around 600 members join in fellowship to celebrate the festive
season with live music and a sumptuous dinner.
Christmas in Negombo
A special program to celebrate Christmas in Negombo
will be launched, State Resources and Enterprise Development
Ministry states. Solutions to problems faced by medium and small
scale business community will be offered, and Negombo Police
together with Municipal authorities will take action to ensure
hygienic condition of the food sold to the public, through frequent
raids on hotels and shops. Action will also be taken to maintain
fair prices on commodities, sources said.
New oil pipeline to save cost, time
The new underground pipeline system built with an
investment of US $ 64 million to supply crude oil to Muthurajawela,
direct from ships in the mid seas is scheduled to be opened this
month.
With this operation in place the oil refinery would
be able to save over US $ 200,000 from each shipment. In addition
the Refinery would also be able to refine and store petrol as well
as crude oil thus increasing the efficiency of the Refinery and
bringing in more profits.
Oil is now being transported in vehicles from
Colombo Port to the Refinery and Traffic congestion too would ease
due to this operation. -S.S.
Nine schols to study in Europe
The University of Colombo has received nine
scholarships under the Erasmus Mundas MAHEVA project of the European
Union.
This was confirmed at a meeting held from November 8
to 10 at the University of Montpeller II in France. The program
included 10 Asian universities and seven universities in the
European Union. Sri Lanka was among the Asian countries in the
program.
The leadership of this project was vested with the
Institute for Agro-technology and Rural Sciences of the University
of Colombo.
Professor Kshanika Hirimburegama, Vice Chancellor of
the University who participated at the meeting representing Sri
Lanka, was instrumental in securing these scholarships.
Mother needs help

Winifreda Dharshani of 233/15 Colombo -14, a mother of a daughter and
a baby is suffering from speech and hearing disorder. Doctors who have
been treating her say Rs. 30 Lakhs is needed for her treatment. She
