Parking boon for vehicle owners

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will implement a Parking Regulation System (PRS) for the benefit of over 250,000 vehicle owners in the city's car parks.

The CMC will introduce a special system to park vehicles at over 2,000 parking slots in the city run by the CMC. CMC, Director Engineering (Traffic Design and Road Safety), K.A.D.N. Wickramaratne told the Sunday Observer that the sole objective of implementing the PRS was to provide protection and relief to vehicle owners who face difficulties when parking vehicles.

According to a recent survey carried out by a group of University students on vehicles entering the Colombo city, many private vehicle park owners earn a colossal sum of money on vehicle parks.

It is reported that some park owners charge exorbitant fees from vehicle owners to park vehicles even for 15 minutes. A university student said it was pathetic that the authorities turn a blind eye to it. Wickramaratne said that the PRS would provide some sort of relief to vehicle owners who park vehicles at CMC parks.

He said the Parking Regulation System report is being drafted by officials and it would be gazetted in due course.
