More than hundred Tamil writers from many parts of the world gathered
in Colombo to participate in the International Tamil Writers Forum,
which began on Thursday.
It is for the first time that such a large number of Tamil writers
from across the world have gathered in Colombo according to the convenor
of the forum, L. Murugaboopathy from Sydney, Australia.
Professors K. Sivathamby and Saba Jeyaraja inaugurated the forum with
the lighting of the oil lamp.
Before the commencement of the forum at the Tamil Sangam building in
Wellawatta, the delegates were taken in procession with traditional
Nathaswaram music, to the venue, sources said.The organisers of the
event said the peaceful atmosphere in the country ensured the
enthusiastic participation of Tamil writers from India, Singapore,
Malaysia, South Africa, Australia, Canada, the USA and the UK in the
event.
More than 400 local Tamil writers also participated in the forum.
Literary topics under various titles were discussed at the forum
which will conclude with a cultural pageant at the Ramakrishna Hall,
Wellawatta today.
