Promised jobs: Corporal quizzed

A Corporal of the Presidential Security Division (PSD) was taken in for questioning following a tip off that he had collected large sums of money from persons by promising them employment at the Hambantota Port, police sources told the Sunday Observer.

A police party from the Nawalapitiya police station raided his home at Pallegama and arrested the suspect who was in possession of three forged Army identity cards as an officer.

The suspect had allegedly duped several persons by collecting money purportedly on behalf of Namal Rajapaksa MP for Hambantota and the Speaker of Parliament Chamal Rajapaksa to secure employment at the Hambantota Port.

According to police sources, the suspect had collected sums ranging from Rs. 50,000 for a Supervisor’s post and Rs 15,000 for a labourer’s post from people in Polonnaruwa, Avissawella and other areas.

Investigations have revealed that the Corporal concerned had not reported for work for a considerable period of time and had been engaged in a racket.

OIC Nawalapitya Police Station Inspector Udaya Wickremasekera is conducting investigations.

The suspect is due to be produced in court after investigations are completed.
