Pakistan make brisk response to New Zealand's 275

CRICKET: HAMILTON, New Zealand, Jan 8 (AFP) - Pakistan overcame an early setback to make brisk inroads into New Zealand's 275 as they went to lunch on the second day of the first cricket Test at 67 for one on Saturday.

New Zealand's first innings came to a quick end on the second morning when they lost their last three wickets for the addition of only 15 runs.

But the Kiwis appeared to have the run of play when the visitors went into bat with Chris Martin capturing Mohammad Hafeez in the first over when Tim McIntosh snapped up a low catch at second slip.

Martin then lost his rhythm and was replaced after four overs when he had conceded 24 runs as Taufeeq Umar and Azhar Ali charged ahead.

Taufeeq was not out 42 with Ali on 23 and looking at ease on a wicket offering more to the batsmen than the bowlers.

New Zealand are likely to be disappointed with their first innings performance with four batsmen reaching half centuries but no one able to carry on.

Brendon McCullum and Tim Southee both went for 56 while Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson were out for 50.

Southee did not add to his overnight score when he was out on the third ball of the day caught in the slips by Younis Khan when fending off a rising ball from Umar Gul.

The catch ended an 84-run stand with Kane Williamson, New Zealand's most productive partnership. Williamson was quick to follow Southee back to the pavilion when he skied an attempt to hook Tanvir Ahmed and was caught by wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal.

Ahmed ended the innings when he had Brent Arnel caught at mid on by Wahab Riaz, leaving him with figures of four for 63.

Abdur Rehman, whose left-arm spin tied up New Zealand on the first day, was not required on the second morning and was unable to add to his overnight figures of three for 51.
