Spona International (Lanka) Sports Club
officials donated a large consignment of garments for the
benefit of the flood-hit families recently. Here the

The family of Nalaka Gunawardena
domiciled in the USA donated school bags, lunch boxes,
books, stationery, a DVD player and cash to students of the
Uyiyankulama School in Mannar recently. Their eight-year-old
daughter Kiyara Gunawardena, a student of Alder Wood Basic
Plus School in California pioneered the idea of rendering
assistance to the needy children in Sri Lanka. Here she

...... India's second consignment arrives
Following the announcement of a relief package of $1
million from Government of India as relief assistance for people,
who have been displaced or affected due to the recent flooding in
Sri Lanka, an Indian Air Force aircraft arrived in Colombo on 17
January with the second consignment of about 30 tonnes of this
assistance.
Earlier on 15 January 2011, High Commissioner of
India Mr. Ashok K. Kantha accompanied Minister of Economic
Development Basil Rajapaksa to Batticaloa and participated in the
distribution of the first consignment of Indian relief material to
flood affected people.
Eastern University sessions resumes
The Registrar of the Eastern University, Sri Lanka
has announced that the academic year 2009/2010 will recommence at
the University from January 24,2011.
Students of all faculties are hereby informed that
all the Academic Sessions which were temporarily suspended for the
academic Year 2009/2010 will recommence from 24th January, 2011 at
the Eastern University, Sri Lanka Vantharumoolai, Chenkalady and
Batticaloa.
All students residing in the hostels are requested
to report to their respective hostels from 6.00 a.m. Saturday, on
22nd January 2011. For further details, students are requested to

Tribute to veteran Dhamma Jagoda
A ceremony to pay tribute to the veteran dramatist
and actor, Dhamma Jagoda will be held on January 31 at 4 pm at the
Institute of Sinhala Culture at No. 375, Bauddhaloka Mawatha,
Colombo 7.
Prof. Tissa Kariyawasam will deliver the keynote
address. Artistes Tilak Gunawardena, Somaweera Senanayake, Ravindra
Randeniya, Jayalal Rohana and Parakrama Niriella will deliver
speeches.

Mahaweli products for cityfolk
A 'budget pack' of Mahaweli consumer products such
as rice, vegetables, coconut, fruits and staples will be introduced
soon in the market to help ease the burden on the Cityfolk,
Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Nimal Siripala de
Silva said.He was speaking at the launch of the Mahaweli Mobile
consumer service in Colombo last week.
This would help prevent the consumer being exploited
by the middleman, said the Minister referring to similar projects
launched some years ago.All Mahaweli sales outlets in Colombo city
will be reopened to cater to the demands of the cityfolk. Subsidiary
crops, fruits, vegetables and short term staple food will be
cultivated in Mahaweli Zones, the minister said.
Analog switch-off in 2017
Sri Lanka will switch off the Analog TV
transmissions from 2018 to opt for a more advanced technology of
digital broadcasting, Telecom Regulatory Commission Director
General, Anusha
Pelpita told theSunday Observer. The pilot project
will begin to replace the existing technology by Digital Video
Broadcasting - second generation Terrestrial (DVB-T2)from the
Western Province in 2017. “Most of the European countries have
already converted from Analog transmissions to DVB - T1. We will be
skipping the first version and
straightaway going to the second generation
technology,” he said,adding the existing Analog TV sets will have to
be replaced after the introduction of the new technology.
Extortion gang in police net
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has
busted an organised racket where members of a gang extorted money
from private buses operating in Dambulla and Thalakiriyagama
following the arrest of the ringleader and three suspects last week,
Police Media Spokesman SP, Prishantha Jayakody told the Sunday
Observer.
Nine members worked for the gang leader of who
resided at Kandalama-Dambulla road. They allegedly worked in three
teams extorting money from private buses plying in the area. The
gang had extorted Rs 3200 within one hour.
Sleuths in civvies travelled in several buses and
learnt the modis operandi of the gang before they were apprehended,
police said. -JJ
She needs funds for surgery
Mrs. Kumudini Herath (40) of Daraluwa, Hunuwila (NWP)
is afflicted with chronic lymphoedena - severe swelling of legs. She
is a mother of two children, whose husband is an ex-postal employee.
A specialist has recommended surgery estimated at
Rs.800,000 to relieve the patient from her misery. Due to indigent
circumstances, her family finds it difficult to foot the medical
bill and as such appeals for public contributions. All contributions
may be remitted to A/c No.034-2-001-3-0680373, People's Bank,
Negombo.
Medical clinic on Jan. 29
A medical clinic organised by the Suhada Seva
Samitiya Panadura will be held on Saturday Jan. 29 from 8.30 a.m. to
1.30 p.m. at the Jeremias Dias school premises. A separate clinic to
vaccinate and sterilize stray dogs will also be held. Tests for
blood sugar and cholesterol will be conducted.
A team of specialist doctors will conduct the
clinics.
