UPFA to finalise LG polls list
The UPFA will convene a meeting at Temple Trees today to discuss and
reach a final decision on the selection of candidates for the mini poll
among the constituent parties of the UPFA.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, UPFA General Secretary Susil
Premajayantha and SLFP General Secretary Maithreepala Sirisena will
preside the meeting. Meanwhile, a party leaders’ meeting of the UPFA was
held at the Prime Minister’s office in Parliament, on Friday where they
discussed the preparation of the UPFA nominations list. The meeting was
chaired by Prime Minister Jayaratne.
The main focus of the discussion was the selection of the best
candidates to run for the mini election scheduled in March. The Prime
Minister stressed at the meeting that everyone should focus on selecting
candidates who could defeat the Opposition candidate at the poll. All
constituent party leaders of the UPFA attended the meeting. Sri Lanka
Muslim Congress Leader Rauf Hakeem whose party will be contesting
certain Local Government bodies in the East together with the UPFA was
also present.
The other leaders included Omalpe Sobitha Thera of the JHU, NFF
Leader Wimal Weerawansa, Prof. Tissa Vitharana, DEW Gunasekera, a
representative from the Kandurata Janatha Party, Dinesh Gunawardena,
Susil Premajayantha, Vasudeva Nanayakkara and representatives of the
main Tamil parties. |
