CRICKET: Matara Uyanwatte Cricket Stadium and its immediate
surroundings are to be renovated to bring the grounds upto international
standards to accommodate international matches. The Matara District
Cricket Association revealed that the Uyanwatte Stadium currently owned
and managed by the Matara Municipal Council will be renovated so that
the authorities will be able to stage three-day international cricket
fixtures. The improvement of the ground and facilities for accommodation
of visiting players were discussed at a meeting with President Mahinda
Rajapaksa at Temple Trees.
The development and change of management will not prevent the use of
the grounds by the schools and clubs in the area for their inter-school
cricket matches, athletic meets and school sports meets. The
improvements envisaged, however will not prevent the many people who use
the periphery for their jogging and daily exercises.
The Nawaloka pavilion will be refurbished immediately at a cost of
rupees five million well in time to accommodate "Big" inter-school
matches scheduled for March.
A modern pavilion, scoreboard, sightscreens, indoor stadium, bowling
machine and accommodation facilities for the night for visiting teams
will soon be installed.
