Army Colours Night January 27

ARMY COLOURS NIGHT: The Army Colours Night - a much looked forward to event in the past and which had to be put off due to the 'war situation' will be revived again on Thursday January 27 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

Due to the war situation in the country a Colours Night could not be held in the Army since 1997, with the war situation over and peace prevailing in the country, this much looked forward to Colours Night is being revived and it is due the efforts of the Commander of the Army.

Further the Defence Services Colours could not be awarded since year 2003 and the Defence Service Colours from year 2003 to year 2009 will also be awarded in Colours Nights of respective services.

This time at the Colours Night Army sportsmen/women who are eligible for Army Colours from year 1997 to 2010 and who are also eligible for Defence Services Colours from year 2003 to 2009 will receive colours.

In the Army 34 sports committees function under the Sports Central Board of the Sri Lanka Army and out of the 34 committees 1,109 sports men/women representing 28 sports become eligible for Army Colours.

Several differently-abled sportsmen will also receive Colours for the following sports: Swimming, Table Tennis, Basketball, Shooting, Wheelchair Marathon, Wheelchair Tennis, Archery, Cycling, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Badminton, Athletics, Badminton, Volleyball, Bodybuilding and Weightlifting.

In the Army there are 340 sportsmen/women who are eligible for Defence Services Colours in 21 sports events out of the 27 held at Defence Services Sports Meets.

Due to the difficulty of awarding Colours to all 1,449 sportsmen/women at the Colours Night, 100 selected sportsmen/women will be awarded and the rest will be awarded at Colours Nights organised at Regimental Level.
