Army Colours Night January 27
ARMY COLOURS NIGHT: The Army Colours Night - a much looked
forward to event in the past and which had to be put off due to the 'war
situation' will be revived again on Thursday January 27 at the
Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.
Due to the war situation in the country a Colours Night could not be
held in the Army since 1997, with the war situation over and peace
prevailing in the country, this much looked forward to Colours Night is
being revived and it is due the efforts of the Commander of the Army.
Further the Defence Services Colours could not be awarded since year
2003 and the Defence Service Colours from year 2003 to year 2009 will
also be awarded in Colours Nights of respective services.
This time at the Colours Night Army sportsmen/women who are eligible
for Army Colours from year 1997 to 2010 and who are also eligible for
Defence Services Colours from year 2003 to 2009 will receive colours.
In the Army 34 sports committees function under the Sports Central
Board of the Sri Lanka Army and out of the 34 committees 1,109 sports
men/women representing 28 sports become eligible for Army Colours.
Several differently-abled sportsmen will also receive Colours for the
following sports: Swimming, Table Tennis, Basketball, Shooting,
Wheelchair Marathon, Wheelchair Tennis, Archery, Cycling, Wheelchair
Basketball, Wheelchair Badminton, Athletics, Badminton, Volleyball,
Bodybuilding and Weightlifting.
In the Army there are 340 sportsmen/women who are eligible for
Defence Services Colours in 21 sports events out of the 27 held at
Defence Services Sports Meets.
Due to the difficulty of awarding Colours to all 1,449
sportsmen/women at the Colours Night, 100 selected sportsmen/women will
be awarded and the rest will be awarded at Colours Nights organised at
Regimental Level. |
