Refrain from using polythene - CEA

Central Environment Authority (CEA) appeals political parties for a 'environment friendly' political campaign during the forthcoming local government election scheduled in March.

In a statement issued by the CEA its Chairman Chanritha Herath called upon the candidates to help preserve environment by minimal or non use of polythene in the polls campaigns.

Election time witnesses a hapazard use of harmful polythene in every street corner and public grounds used as venues for political rallys, etc.

The CEA in collaboration with State institutions has introduced measures to cut down the use of environmentally harmful polythene in the country. Thus, the production, selling and the use of polythene thinner than 20 microns is baned since 2007. (MF)
