The 63rd Independence Day
celebrations organised by the Colombo Municipal Council
(CMC) was held at the CMC Town Hall lawn, Friday. Here a
bevy of school girls sing the national anthem, while CMC
Special Commissioner, Omar Kamil, W. P. C. Minister and
chief guest Udaya Gammanpila and Colombo Divisional
Secretary, S. Hapuarachchi stand to attention.

National Day celebrations
The Sri Lanka Pakistan Friendship Association
(SLPFA) in association with the Pakistan High Commission will mark
Sri Lanka’s 63rd year of Independence on February 13, at the Women’s
International Club, said the Patron of the Association Seema Illahi
Baloch.
The program has been drawn up by the Chairman of the
organising committee, General Srilal Weerasooriya, former Army
Commander, former High Commissioner to Pakistan and former President
SLPFA and President of the Association - Ifthikhar Aziz.
The strong bonds of friendship between the
governments and the people of Sri Lanka and Pakistan will be
depicted through traditional and cultural events. The Sri Lanka Army
Cultural Troupe will perform traditional low country and up country
dances, in addition to Bharatha natyam and fusion dancing in the
evenings. Traditional arts and craft will also be on display.
Undergrad courses in India
Applications are invited from prospective Sri Lankan
students for nomination to undergraduate course in Bachelor of
Engineering (BE), Medicine (MBBS), Bachelor of Pharmacy course under
the Self-Financing Scheme for the academic year 2011-12 against
reserved seats of Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi.
The application form for the above course can be
collected in person from the Education Wing of Indian High
Commission, Colombo on any working day between 1400 -1600 hours. The
candidates are required to produce G.C.E ‘O/L’, ‘A/L’ certificates,
Sri Lanka (issued by the Dept. of Examination, Battaramulla) / G.C.E
‘O/L’, ‘A/L’ certificates, London and Birth Certificate at the time
of collecting the forms.
Sri Lankan students who are studying (10+2) in India
can also apply with pending final declaration of their 10+2
examination results.
Last date for submission of applications is March
30.
Night Food Market in Colombo
The Sri Lanka Food Processors Association would
conduct a Night Food Market on February 15 at the Vihara Maha Devi
Park (Green Path - Maldekma), Colombo from 4.00 p.m. to 12.00
midnight. The event would give the opportunity for over 50
manufacturers to offer their products and services at discounted
prices to consumers to support the efforts of the Government to
bring down the cost of living.
Arrangements are also being made to sell vegetables
and coconuts at concessionary prices. The Association plans to
organise events of this nature at various locations on a continuous
basis.
Pirith pinkama
A Pirith pinkama to invoke blessings on President
Mahinda Rajapaksa, Country, Nation, Police and the three Armed
Forces will be held on January 7 at the Biyagama police station.

Deputy Minister Duleep Wijesekara, WPC members Gunasiri Jayanath,
Shalitha Wijesundara, Gampaha District DIG H S Dayananda, Kelaniya
SSP Kithsiri Ganegama and Kelaniya ASP (Miss) Madara Ariyasena will
participate the Pirith Pinkama.
This is organised by the OIC Biyagama Police, CIP

Beginning of Holy Month
The Colombo Grand Mosque announced that it was
decided to commence the Islamic month of Rabi-Unil-Awwal, 1432, from
yesterday evening.Colombo Grand Mosque General Secretary Nazushan
Hassen stated in a press release that reliable evidence of sighting
of the New Moon was received yesterday evening.
