player for the last Olympics and two sisters Hansanie and Madhavi
Weeratunge who excelled in swimming and Madhavi represented Sri Lanka at
the Youth Olympics in swimming in 2010, the present Prefect of Games
Dhammika Mahawattage nee De Alwis and Hyacinth Wijesinghe, both
represented Sri Lanka in netball in the past, Padmadevi Nawaratne and
Chintha Baddewela exvelled in athletics and Ayeshani Weerakkody is the
former Under 21 captain of Sri Lanka Hockey team.
Prasadini Koralagama and Lakitha Namalarachchi also represented Sri
Lanka in hockey, Deepika Rodrigo won a Silver Medal for Table Tennis at
the last Asian Games. These few names come to my mind in a flash
although there are more Mahamaya girls who excelled in various sports at
National and International levels.
Mahamaya has introduced Cricket, Karate, Chess and Gymnastic and for
any sport to thrive specially at school level the sports must have the
backing of the school authorities. The sports loving Principal Indra
Withanachchi together with the Deputy Principals, Asoka Dissanayake,
Vishaka Herath, Uthpala Seneviratne and Gimali Senadheera, Prefect of
Games Dammika Mahawattage and Teachers-in-charge in various sports have
helped the school in going places in sports. The Principal summoned a
meeting of all the teachers-in-charge and all the coaches in various
sports to plan out the annual sports program and instructed to get
better results this year. All the coaches told this reporter that they
will do their best to uplift the sports at the school. |
