English, IT for university students

A three-week training program on leadership and a three-month training program in English and Information Technology will be given to university students from next year, said Higher Education Ministry Secretary Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawaratna. The aim of this scheme is to facilitate them for the university eduction, he said.

Under the residential leadership program students qualified for university admission will be taught the importance of teamwork, descipline, motivation and soft skills. The program envisages to mould healthy and mature students who could pursue studies, he said. The Secretary said that the university students should have a sound English and IT knowledge to continue university education. Prior to admission to universities, the students will be given a three-months English and IT training in their residential areas.

The program will be conducted at the National On-line Distance Education Services Centres (NOLDES) and 300 selected schools islandwide, he said. Students seeking university admission are required to sit for the English paper at the Advanced Level Examination from this year.
